Postdoctoral Fellows

PostDoctoral Fellow

Donald Cerio, PhD

dcerio1@jhmi.edu

Education:
  • BA, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
  • PhD, Ohio University, Athens, OH
Previous Institutions:
  • Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Athens, OH
Dr. Cerio studies the visual systems of birds, crocodilians, and other reptiles, along with their extinct relatives. His primary aim is to quantify morphological and functional trade-offs between the eyes and other cranial tissues, and to shed light on the selective regimes under which these trade-offs arose.

PostDoctoral Fellow

Elaine Y. Chu, PhD

elainechu@nevada.unr.edu

Education:
  • BS, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI
  • MA, Texas State University, San Marcos, TX
  • PhD, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, NV
Dr. Chu applies robust statistical methods to quantify skeletal growth and development and human variation. Her primary research uses virtual mediums to diversify contemporary skeletal data and explore how modern human variation affects population structure for forensic and bioarchaeological applications.

PostDoctoral Fellow

Allison L. Machnicki, PhD

amachni2@jh.edu

Education:
  • BS Kent State University , Kent, OH
  • PhD The Pennsylvania State University , University Park, PA
Previous Institutions:
  • Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, Marshall University – Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Machnicki studies variation in the post-cranial skeleton resulting from evolutionary and environmental factors. She is interested in how differences in skeletal morphology impact function. One aspect of her research focuses on the evolution and development of variation in the vertebral column and pelvis of primates. Recently, she has also been investigating how diet content and body composition impact bone development and architecture.

PostDoctoral Fellow

Alyssa G. Oberman, PhD

aoberma1@jh.edu

Education:
  • BSE Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ
  • MS Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ
  • PhD The University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN
Previous Institutions:
  • Department of Biological Sciences, University of Notre Dame – Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Oberman studies bone mechanobiology and how mechanical input corresponds to morphological changes in the tissue. Her previous work focused on developing in situ models of orthopedic implants to evaluate limitations to osseointegrated knee implants. Her most recent research focus has been exploring the local mechanical and biological cues that differ between skull and long bones to understand how the skull can retain mechanical and material integrity without distinct external loading.
